DWARF-PLANET PLUTO VIEWED FROM EARTH

FOV:  2' (arc-min)       Magnification:  900x       Compare Current Planets

Note: because Pluto has a relatively highly elliptical orbit, over centuries the dwarf planet's apparent diameter in our sky can nearly double in size!  However, with an average apparent magnitude of 15.1, Pluto is still only a very dim point ol light even in a 10" telescope.  In fact, even the Hubble Space Tel- escope (HST) has difficulty imaging the most famous of the dwarf planets.

FOV and Magnification vary so Pluto fills image

FOV:  5" (arc-sec)       Magnification:  21,600x (to show full Charon orbit)

Bonus: Pluto's Current Position Over Earth

This bonus view is provided so you can determine if Pluto currently may be visible from your location on Earth.  Of course, because it is fantastically dim, Pluto can be seen only at night, and only through an extremely capable telescope.  The view above lets you glean Pluto's direction from your location.  If your location is visible on the above globe, then the closer it is to the view's center, the higher Pluto will be in "your" sky.

Simulator Image Notes:  1) Fields of View are measured horizontally.  2) Top orbital view orientation: Ecliptic north "upward", i.e. in
the 12:00 midnight direction.  3) Pluto's next two views' orientation: planetary local north "upward".  4) Pluto's and Charon's view's (bottom) orientation: Ecliptic north "upward".  5) Eclipse shadows of planetary moons are not displayed.  6) Light-Travel Time is not included in calculated times.
